Rafael Mariano Grossi meets Polimi students

FROM FERMI PILE TO IAEA: INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION IN THE NUCLEAR FIELD

On December 2nd 2022, the 80th anniversary of the first controlled nuclear chain reaction carried out under the guidance of Enrico Fermi (2 December 1942), Rafael Mariano Grossi, Director General of the IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency), met the students of Politecnico di Milano.
The IAEA, created in 1957, is an organization of the United Nations, universally known as “Atoms for Peace and Development”, whose mission is to promote international cooperation in the nuclear field. In 2005, the IAEA was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for its efforts for a safer and more peaceful world.

In the weeks preceding the meeting, over 300 students took part in the Passion in Action initiative “From Fermi Pile to IAEA: international cooperation in the nuclear field” aimed at guiding all the interested students of the Politecnico di Milano toward this event.
The initiative consisted of three preparatory sessions: the first has been an opportunity to learn the history and scientific aspects of the Fermi Pile, the first nuclear fission reactor, and to learn about the IAEA, its activities and its contribution to the challenges of humanity through the peaceful application of nuclear disciplines and technologies; in the second and third sessions -of a more interactive nature- themes, reflections and questions to be directed to Rafael Mariano Grossi have been identified and discussed together.
